Dr. ‘Abdul Hamid Ahmad Abu Sulayman
Dr. ‘Abdul Hamid Ahmad
Abu Sulayman who was born on 1936 in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, is one of the
famous social thinker and leader of the Muslim ummah .He is also known
as the introducer of a knowledge movement named “Islamization of
Knowledge”.
He has completed his
bachelor (B.A, Commerce) and masters (M.A, Political Science) degree
from University of Cairo in 1959 and 1963 respectively. In 1973, he
achieved his PhD on International Relations from University of
Pennsylvania, USA
After completion his MA
degree, Dr. Sulayman joined as the Secretary of State Planning
Committee, Saudi Arabia in 1963 and working there successfully for two
years till 1964. In his working life he joined at and established
different organization and concentrate with the best possible effort to
perform his duty and responsibility to those institutions.
He was the Secretary
General of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) for seven years
(1973-79) and the Chairman of Department of Political Science at King
Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for two years (1982 -84).
Dr. Abu Sulayman is the
founding member of The Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS,
1972), and its former President (1985-87). Presently he is the Rector of
the International Islamic University (IIU), Malaysia and Chairman of
the Board, trustee, former president, and founding member of the
International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT).
As a social scientist,
Dr. Sulayman has been trying to reshape the subject of social sciences
with the help of Islamic knowledge and technology which is proved by his
writings named ‘The Premises of the Social Sciences, Islamization and
the Science of Education, Islamization and Political Science, Islam,
Science, and Technology.
Like other Muslim
scholars, he is also concern about the present crucial situation of
Muslim ummah around the world. To aware the Muslim people, he is
remaindering them the golden heritage of ummah compared to the present
stage as he has written: “Across the Muslim world today if anything is
self-evident it is that the Ummah is badly in need of reform. On this
point it can be stated with confidence that all Muslims are agreed.
Poverty and injustice characterize the face of Muslim lands from the
Atlantic to the Pacific. Pollution and corruption are the order of the
day in societies where the gulf between then and the developed countries
of the world have never been wider. Politics in the Muslim world are
all too often the politics of desperation, economics the economics of
deprivation, and culture the culture of despair”.
He has participated in
many international workshop, seminar and conferences around the world.
In his speech and articles, he specially emphasized on those topics
which will be more fruitful and effective to recover the present crisis
including ‘the Historical Roots of the Crisis, the Crux of the Crisis
and the Future of the Ummah, the Traditional Methodology of Islamic
Thought: Assessment and Critique, Shari’ah and Non-Shari’ah Sciences,
the Conflict Between Reason and Revelation, Our Intellectual Heritage:
Past, Present, and Future, Islamic Methodology: Means and Application,
Requirements for Establishing the Islamic Civilizational Sciences, the
philosophy of economics , Islamization of knowledge, the duty and
responsibility of youth to remove the misconceptions about Islam by
practicing Islam in their life.
To serve and reform the
activities of ummah, Dr. Abu Sulayman has been writing many books and
articles including ‘The Islamic Theory of International Relations: New
Directions for Islamic Methodology and Thought, Azmat al ‘Aql al
Muslim (Arabic), and The Islamic Theory of Economics: Philosophy and
Contemporary Means ,Crisis in the Muslim mind .the doctrine of
crucifixion between Islam and Christianity: A dialogue and comparative
study, Man between two laws: a Qur’anic perspective in understanding
self and understanding the other, Translation and connecting arteries of
Arab culture with the gift of Human civilization, Contemporary Islamic
presentational approach: Distortions, Confusions and superficialization,
Arabic language and challenges of the age, Islam as a faith,, Identity,
personality and civilization, Islam is aqidah, identity and
personality.
Dr. ‘Abdul Hamid is
also well-known to the people of Bangladesh. Some of his books and
articles are available in both English and Bangle in our country. The
translated copy of His famous book “Crisis in the muslim mind (Muslim
manose sankat)” is published by the Bangladesh Institute of Islamic
Though (BIIT) which is the country office and brunch of International
Institute of Islamic Though (IIIT). As youth, we should study those
books to be inspired and enlightened.
